The key question lying here is: what is college for? Almost everyone agrees that going to college is to improve the chance of living a good life, but what is a good life? Is it a life that aims for wealth and success (in terms of owning a respectable social status) or a life that emphasizes on everyday happiness with a free and independent mind?
The article reminded me of the comment of Qian Liqun, a well-known Chinese scholar, “Our universities are fostering sophisticated egoists.” Yet in my opinion, rather than merely serving for your own interests, your access to educational and social resources should always accords with your social responsibility. This is how our society progresses. Even if you take your future success rather than learning how to think as your premier goal in college, you should be aware that your access of vast excellent educational resources is what so many other people around the world are craving for.
