I was 13 when one place opened up down the street. I thought it would be cool to learn, and my parents were encouraging. I’d taken lessons in calligraphy, tennis, taek-won-do, swimming — and it was clear I had no foreseeable talent. Chinese was their last attempt. The teachers drilled us with passages Soviet-style until we could recite passages on demand. I found fascinating the elegant characters and the rich language that shared much heritage with Korean. I’ve since visited China on many occasions and studied Chinese history & politics in college. China story: New Year’s Eve 2003—I stood shoulder to shoulder with my brother and hundreds of thousands of others in Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong district. We overheard a man next to us speak with an Australian accent, and my brother looked wide-eyed at me, “That’s so weird!” He whisper-shouted into my ear. “That Chinese guy speaks with an Australian accent!” Truth be told, I had the same surprised reaction, but we both quickly realized our folly, and so I said, “But that’s probably what a lot of people think about us, speaking with American accents!” What does Chinese identity look like across the world? From seeing the ubiquitousness of 肉骨茶 (bak kut teh) in dim sum in Thailand, to my interactions with Kazakh nomads in their yurts and Uyghur men outside of Kashgar’s mosques in 新疆 (Xinjiang), to my own experiences growing up jook sing in America, I’m interested in all the hybrid forms of Chinese identity, whether Chinesness is something we try to preserve, seek more of, or is something imposed upon us.
