What comes to mind when you think of Medusa? Deadly, repulsive, or frightening? Are you surprised to find out that she was once beautiful and virtuous? She’s misunderstood! The powerful woman was raped, demonized, then slain by a patriarchal society. Silencing women and objectifying the female body? Is this an ancient myth or a modern reality? After centuries, conversations about rape culture finally began to restore Medusa’s voice.

The feminist writer Hélène Cixous asserted that the story of Medusa was created by man through fear of female power. She said:

“You only have to look at the Medusa straight on to see her. And she’s not deadly. She’s beautiful and she’s laughing.”
