Artist – Yvette Yu
Growing up surrounded by strong female figures in my family, I always believed I can achieve anything I wanted. Being in the business school and interning at different countries gave me a taste of professional life early, and I soon realized that the road ahead of me was not a fair game for individuals of different genders — and this phenomenon exists across borders and cultures.
As I dived deeper into the topic of workplace inequality, I came across with Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In, which ultimately inspired me to create this painting. Here I portrayed a woman in business attire and holding her baby, in a background (or foreground?) with a rooftop of a house which could both shelter and limit her physical and intellectual ability.
