I recently started keeping a sticky-note on the bottom right corner of my computer screen that keeps expanding and expanding. It’s a sticky-note filled with quotes that I have collected over the years—-a few that I’ve always really liked (“Frequently wrong, never in doubt”—one of my favorites by a mentor of mine), and many that I’ve collected in recent months as a result of my newfound obsession with inspirational or otherwise insightful quotes. One quote I have on my sticky is the motto of Levo League: “Lift as you climb.” I was really struck by the quote mostly because of its succinctness: it’s short, catchy, poetic, and captures the essence of mentorship and paying it forward.
As a senior now, I’ve been spending more and more time mentoring my classmates, ranging from freshmen who want to learn more about the entrepreneurship scene at Harvard to junior and senior friends recruiting for jobs. When people reach out to me for advice, I feel flattered and excited to help.
When I talked to the founder of Levo League, however, she mentioned that one prevalent problem in the workplace is the lack of constructive mentoring relationships. Too often, people are reluctant to help others work their way up the corporate ladder simply because they see these newer folks as a possible threat. “Lift as you climb,” however, emphasizes the power of helping others as you reach for bigger and greater accomplishments as well. Personally, I love mentoring others for the “feel-good” happiness I receive. Moreover, I remember all of the upperclassmen and mentors who have so generously devoted time to me, and would like to take this opportunity to thank them for lifting as they climb.
最近,
you climb”。
