Near the end of August, my best friend and I were running along the streets of trendy downtown San Francisco when a window display made me do a double take. In the large, glossy display of Hermès were mannequins decked out in something that could easily have come from my grandmother’s closet! Two piece suits, silky, with repeating patterns from head to toe.

I quickly pointed it out to my friend, and she agreed. Not only were they a rather monotonous repeating box pattern, but they were also brown and yellow in color. These high-end clothes not only looked Asian, they looked like the hideous matching outfits we had been taught were unfashionable. As we continued down the street, again and again, more of these seemingly Asian influenced clothes appeared whether it was the decadent silk and embroidery (reminiscent of the Chinese Qipao) or black leather kimonos (indicative of the Japanese samurai and ninjas). The crazy thing is this wasn’t just one designer, but many!

I couldn’t quite get this obvious Asian influence out of my head, even though whenever I skimmed the handful of fashion blogs I never heard a peep about these fall trends. Well, this winter, I decided to investigate and found the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 trends on Style.com, where my theory was confirmed. Check out the Fall 2012 trends and you will quickly see under the trends “Brocade Brigade,” “Matching Order,” and “Year of the Dragon” keen Asian influences. Under the Spring 2013 trends, it’s a little more obvious, with the trend title “Asia Society.”

While many might shrug at the sudden high fashion adoption of traditional Asian styles, it should be taken as a positive sign. After all, fashion dictates taste, and apparently Asian is in. Maybe it’s time to bust out some of your mother’s or grandmother’s abandoned wardrobe and take your pick!
