Whenever I’m traveling I make a point to visit a park, wherever I may be. Over the years, I’ve come to find a sort of serenity and calm in parks, no matter where I am. This has proven no different in China.
Walking the streets of a new city is one of my favorite ways to discover local restaurants, markets, and parks. What I have found in parks all around the world is that you can always find locals relaxing and enjoying the scenery. Parks are one of the few places where I can almost always blend in and feel like I am a part of that community. Even being a foreigner, generally being stared at 90 percent of the time, in parks, I may get a glance, but people are often too content and focused on their friends and families to be bothered with me.
Visiting a park is one of my favorite ways to clear my head, read a book, or observe what is going on around me. Parks are my retreat; my home away from home. The sense of peace, the beauty of the nature around me, and winding paths never cease to make me appreciate public parks. Everywhere I have traveled I have found a great park where I can relax and feel like a local.
I encourage all fellow travelers to seek out the parks in the cities you visit. You’ll find older people exercising and listening to music, middle-aged people salsa dancing in a place you never thought you’d see it, young children running around in the grass with their parents looking on fondly and taking pictures. These are the everyday people and everyday activities that make you feel comfortable because they are familiar to everyone. So take a walk, see what your city has to offer – I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
